Chad Huff recently posted on our “Trick My Skiff” discussion group for a friend an original Hell’s Bay Whipray (Hull #7), the boat was located in Chokoloskee, Florida. What a sweet, skinny water ride!
Chris (one of the original founders of Hell’s Bay) described the build as:
This was the lightest Whipray he ever built with lots of Carbon. It was the first to have no floor to save weight. The skiff is light because when I built it the owner said to do what I could to save weight. So I did not gelcoat the underside of the deck. Saved 6-7lbs. The floor was not put in and it has carbon in the bottom on this inside layer. About 10-12 lbs When I built this skiff I laid in dyvinycell core right onto the outer glass skin which was laid up all at once. I saved weight because of not using a bonding putty like in later boats. Saves weight if done properly. Maybe 4-5 lbs. also when I built these skiffs I watched every drop of resin and wicked it away with a brush by hand. You’d be surprised how much you get and it makes the boats stinger. Today look at videos of the skiffs being cored with tons of bonding putty. Yikes, good thing I’am not there bitching and moaning.
It came with the original 25HP 2-Stroke Mercury with very low hours and a new dry-launch aluminum Continental trailer. There was also a new 25HP Mercury in the box available for an extra price. He was asking $25,000.00. As of 8/2015 no word on if it sold or for how much.
About Hell’s Bay Boatworks
Hell’s Bay Boatworks was formed by renowned Florida fishing guide Flip Pallot, along with visionary boat designer Chris Morejohn with one goal in mind … to build the finest fishing boats ever conceived. Merely improving conventional designs was not good enough. They wanted to make sweeping changes in design and construction that would revolutionize the shallow water fishing industry.
