Honda has delighted inshore boaters with an exciting refresh on both of their popular 40 and 50 HP motors. Both the Honda Marine BF40 and BF50 EFI provide the perfect balance of powerful acceleration and some stellar numbers on fuel efficiency.
New features include the new Honda signature “crouching form” design, a new multi-function tiller handle, a multi-function-display with trolling control and a new switch panel application for multiple engine installations.
For those of us on the inshore saltwater scene, the new BF40 and BF50 models have added a new freshwater water flushing hose on the water jacket cover for easier access. They’ve also reduced engine vibration at idling compared with the previous models which is critical when sneaking up on those skittish redfish. Honda also now features the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) certification.
Both motor choices feature Honda’s in-line 3-cylinder engine with Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) as well as several Honda-exclusive technologies including: Honda’s patented Boosted Low Speed Torque® (BLAST®) system – which advances ignition timing for explosive ‘hammer-down’ acceleration, and Lean Burn Control adjusts the air/fuel mixture for maximum fuel efficiency at cruise. Technologies innovations like this are very important and the ability to improve on both simultaneously withing sacrificing either is a major plus for inshore anglers and boaters.
SKiff Life fans found the BLAST technology to be of special interest. Boosted Low Speed Torque, or BLAST, uses Honda’s patented spark advance system to propel the boat to plane in just seconds.
When you move the throttle quickly, BLAST is activated:
- The throttle body opens up
- The air-fuel ratio goes to a richer setting
- The ignition timing advances aggressively
This allows the engine to make more torque, or power. “Hole Shot” is vastly improved, as more horsepower gets the hull up on plane quicker. This is critical in our inshore setting where popping up on plane in shallow water is key.
Among the lightest outboards in their class, the 214-pound BF40 and BF50 EFI feature a lightweight, 22-amp alternator that offers best-in-class 17-amp charging capacity for multiple electronic accessories.
