Bateau’s SK14 is without a doubt one of the skinniest water micro-skiffs we’ve had the pleasure of running. We’ve literally floated this rig in about 2 1/2″ of water! Even more satisfying is that we successfully completed building this boat from the ground up using plans provided by veteran boat designer and builder, Jacques Mertens. Jacques is the owner of Bateau (his boat design site) and Boat Builder Central (one of the best collections of boat building supplies on the web).
Thomas Scroggins first brought our attention to a similar style a few years ago, a production model called the Pelican Ambush in a Skiff Porn showcasing his rig and his masterful command of running the tiny micro in the skinny.
Introducing Bateau’s SK14 (and FS13).
This sweet rig weighs under 125lbs. and can accommodate up to 8 horses (With our 8HP it Flys, I mean REALLY Flys!) and is stable enough for even the big boys to walk around the edges slinging bugs or netting linesider snook. A smaller 13′ model is also available called the FS13. The best part? The plans are so complete and easy to follow that you can easily build this yourself with simple garage found tools. We’ve tried 3 different seating arrangements with the tiller controled 8 HP Yammy 2 stroke. They’ve all performed equally well, but the grab bar provided the most control especially when jumping large wake (don’t try that at home). Enjoy, we’ll post construction pics in an upcoming post. In the meantime, we have to get back to more “field testing”.
Best Selling Cooler & Car Decals & Boat Stickers
Skiff Life is so much more than simply selling fishing decals, fishing hats & fishing shirts, we are committed to learning the craft of boat building & design and passing that knowledge on. Not many brands can say that, and I’m especially proud of this build.
Would it be possible to have a small child on this as well as an adult, or would it seem unstable? Starting my build very soon…
