A huge hook and line hogfish was a major target of ours on an overnight trip to the Elbow 85 miles off Anna Maria this past weekend aboard Logan Beal’s 27 Ocean Master. The crew of Jason Stock, Eric Pullen and Logan Walters had all the baits ready to target them. Captain Jason Stock, of www.jmsnookykayakcharters.com, really got them dialed in on hook and line this winter in much shallower depths but he wanted to get a big one.
Logan Walters was using a live shiner for bait looking for grouper or snapper as Jason and Eric focused on the hogs. Logan Beal kept the boat over the spot as we dropped and Walters bowed up with a good fish. As it came in sight Beal knew right away it was a huge hogfish. Once it cleared the gunnel the celebration began! After some pictures the fish went 17 lbs on boga grip and was 31″ to the fork. Everyone was elated about the catch and shocked it came on the bait it did, but we were not going to complain. We finished off the trip catching Red Grouper, Mangrove Snapper, Yellow Eye Snapper, AJ’s, Blackfin Tuna, Porgies, but the fish of the trip was definitely the huge Hogfish.
